Huawei’s sub-brand Honor launched its flagship Honor 6 Plus in India earlier this year, priced at Rs 26,499. In addition to a sleek design, and top-of-the-line specs, the smartphone’s photographic capabilities are one of its major talking points. To demonstrate just how good the Honor 6 Plus’ camera really is, we pit it against the impressive Apple iPhone 6. Read on to find out how it fared.
A word on the Honor 6 Plus’ photographic capabilities before we proceed. This flagship smartphone features a unique combination of two 8-megapixel cameras at the back, which Honor calls ‘bionic parallel dual-lens camera’.
As per the company, it offers the fastest focus within 0.1 seconds and depth recording for panoramic imaging. With Vision Camera technology and the help of its dual camera lens, the amount of light-in and the photosensitive area is twice the light-in captured by single-lens; this gives clearer and precise results under low-light giving it a HDR effect. Up front too, it offers an 8-megapixel camera with Sony BSI sensor. It is equipped with 10-level auto face enhancement and ‘Panoramic Selfie’.
The iPhone 6, on the other hand, features an 8-megapixel f/2.2 rear camera with phase detection autofocus, dual-tone flash, and support for 1080p video recording. Up front, there is a 1.2-megapixel f/2.2 FaceTime HD camera with Face detection and burst mode that clicks 10 photos in a second.
A camera comparison is not just about the quality of the photos, but the camera app and usability as well. In terms of startup speed, both are equally quick, and one can fire the camera app from the lock screen itself with a swipe. The UI on both the apps are quite minimalistic, and we will also go ahead and say that they look a tad similar. You can switch between different shooting modes by swiping across the screen, the gallery and effects buttons are at the either side of the shoot button, while other options are placed at the top.
Coming to the photos themselves, we clicked photos in the auto (default) settings mode, without tweaking any settings, since this is how most people use their smartphone cameras. We clicked a scene one after another using the two cameras, and there could be slight differences in the framing of a shot. We are also passing our judgment after viewing the photos from both the cameras on our laptop.
When outdoors, both the cameras are quite exceptional and do a fabulous job in capturing the details in a shot. In terms of colors, the photos clicked from the Honor 6 are a tad warmer, while Apple’s smartphone sticks to more natural colors. When placed next to each other, there is barely any loss in details, but the photos clicked on the Honor 6 are unusually bright. This is why we would side with the iPhone 6 here because of the more natural looking photos.

Indoors under ambient lighting there is some noise in the photos, especially when you zoom in. The photo clicked using the Honor 6 Plus is yet again brighter than the iPhone 6, which makes for a more colorful photo. As seen in the above photos, the shot from the iPhone 6 looks a tad faded when compared to the Honor 6 Plus.
With the presence of two camera lens at the back, the Honor 6 Plus has a feature called wide aperture mode. This helps in capturing photos with variable depth of field, but also lets you change the focus of the shot after it has been clicked.
As for selfie lovers, the Honor 6 Plus features an 8-megapixel selfie camera, while the iPhone 6 features a 1.2-megapixel FaceTime camera. While on paper there is a huge difference, in terms of photo quality there is little. For click pictures worthy of sharing on social media, both the cameras are more than capable.
Both the Honor 6 Plus and the iPhone 6 boast excellent cameras with their own capabilities. Outdoors Apple’s smartphone clicks the better and more natural-looking photos. While indoors despite the noise, the Honor 6 Plus is able to slightly better looking photos.
